Portugal Day

June 10 is a very important day for Portugal. On this day, in 1580, died Luís de Camões, one of the great references of Portuguese literature. For this reason, this day was chosen to celebrate the Day of Portugal, of Camões and of the Portuguese Communities. This is also the day of the Guardian Angel of Portugal, of the Portuguese language and of the Armed Forces.

But this day was not always celebrated in this way. Since 1933, with the start of the Estado Novo, until the Carnation Revolution (April 25, 1974), on the 10th June were celebrated the national characteristics of the so-called Columbus Day.

With the end of the dictatorship, the Third Republic will continue to celebrate this day but with a different philosophy. From that time, it is celebrated the Day of Portugal, of Camões and of the Portuguese Communities.

June 10 is celebrated throughout the country but only the Official Commemorations are presided over by the President of the Republic and the high personalities of the country. Every year, the President chooses the city to host these commemorations where various military ceremonies, exhibitions, concerts, parades are prepared... Porto has already celebrated it on five occasions, the first in 1985 and the last in 2017. This latter in conjunction with Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo (Brazil). Just a year earlier, it was the first time that it was held in two cities at the same time, hosted in Lisbon and Paris.
